An infant carrier is used for newborns and usually can be used until the child is about 25 pounds. Different seats have different limits. The seat should be installed rear facing.
A convertible seat is used rear facing at first and is for toddlers and older children. Once the child is over 40 pounds then they can switch to forward facing. These seats usually have a five-point harness buckle system.
Booster seats are used for children that are still in need of a car seat but don't fit into a convertible seat. These seats use the vehicle's buckle system.
